How to Read a Game's Difficulty Curve Before You Commit
Every strategy game has a difficulty curve, and learning to read it early saves you frustration. The healthy kind teaches you a mechanic, tests it, then combines it with the last one. The bad kind spikes suddenly and expects you to grind or wait to catch up.
A tell-tale sign of a fake spike is when the game suggests you 'come back later when stronger' rather than change your approach. Good design lets a smarter strategy beat a wall you couldn't brute-force. If the only answer is time or repetition, be wary.
When I test a game, I push until I hit the first real wall and then ask: can I solve this by playing better, or only by playing longer? That single question tells me most of what I need to know about the rest of the experience.
This is why we play several sessions before reviewing. The first hour of almost any game is friendly. The truth shows up around the point where it stops holding your hand.
